The "Nantucket Sampler" is a lovely counted cross stitch sampler inspired by the novel "Ahab's Wife, Or, The Star-Gazer"

by Sena Jeter Naslund. The bottom scene shows a woman and child standing near their home

on a windswept sand dune gazing out at the ocean and watching the sun set into the horizon.

The top scene shows a ship at sea passing a lighthouse on the coastline at days end.

Are the sailors heading out to sea or coming home after a long voyage?

In either case, the family at home patiently waits. The Carrick Bend knots in the center of the cross stitch design

symbolize ties to family and home. The Carrick Bend is one of the strongest of knots.

Forget-me-nots are entwined in the rope. The sentiment "Be Ye Thoughtful and Kind, Be Ye Steadfast and True"

completes the cross stitch sampler. The design is stitched with DMC floss and Caron Waterlilies

and includes the Algerian Eye stitch, Rhodes stitch and Half Rhodes w/Bar stitch.
