"The Sampler" is a celebration of those first teachers in our lives, our Mothers and Grandmothers, who not only taught us embroidery stitches, but passed along their love of needlework as well, thus preserving the needlearts for the generations to follow. The vignette at top shows a Mother and Daughter working their needlework samplers, the Mother teaching the daughter. The hearts that appear in the stitched bands and in the Rhodes Heart Stitches throughout the design symbolize the bonds of love between a Mother and Daughter, the flowers and garden motifs are symbolic of the love that continues to grow throughout the years.
The following original poem is worked in "The Sampler": When Grandma was a girl special stitches were taught and little by little her sampler was wrought. Her daughter she would teach stitches from the sampler fair, guided by her needle's work, fond memories of Mother there. The sampler stitches passed along from Mother to me. Through the years, Grandma taught me as well you see.
"The Sampler" is worked using embroidery floss from DMC and The Gentle Art, embellished with Mill Hill beads, and finished with an Antique Hem Stitched edging and Brass Bell Pull Hardware. It can easily be finished as a framed piece as well. "The Sampler" features the Algerian Eye Stitch, Modified Smyrna Cross Stitch and three variations of Rhodes Heart Stitches. Stitch diagrams, charts and finishing instructions are included in the chartpack.
